9/14/2016 - DP - Session 1 - Life is Choices

Bible Reading: Acts 8:14-17
  • A beautiful example of Confirmation within the bible.
  • You will be experiencing this same sacrament written about in the bible 2000 years ago when you are confirmed next Spring.
  • How great is that!
Introduction to Catechism
  • St. Pope John Paul II described the Catechism as "a statement of the Church’s faith and of Catholic doctrine, attested to or illumined by Sacred Scripture, the apostolic Tradition, and the Church’s magisterium".
  • In today's reading we will hear the words the Bishop (or Priest as his stand-in) uses to invoke the outpouring of the holy spirit.
Catechism Reading: Paragraph #1299

Class Opening Prayer

Welcome

Thank You for making the CHOICE to attend tonight.  Hopefully you will see from tonight's class that this will be different than any of your previous CCD Classes.

What did you think about the Veggie Tales video?

We grow and mature physically; God also calls us to grow spiritually.

Confirmation is a significant milestone on our spiritual growth journey that began at our Baptism and does not end until we die. So, just as you prepare for this milestone of confirmation in your spiritual growth, you have also reached a milestone, called Middle School, in your physical growth and maturity.

This is why you do not react to the Veggie Tales video now in the same way you did when you were five. You are not the same person you were when you were five. You expect to be treated and talked to differently than you were when you were five. At the same time...parents, teachers, and other friends and family members expect more from you now than they did when you were five.

That is why we, your leaders, will be expecting more from you in terms of your behavior.  We don't have a lot of rules but we do have a few very important ones:
1) No phone or electronics use in class unless it is to answer a call from your parents. Your phone may set where you can see it but you are not to be using it unless it is your parents contacting you or we are on break.
2) We will respect everyone by giving our attention to the leaders and fellow students when they are talking to the group and will not be having private conversations with other classmates.
3) We will respect others by not making fun of questions or answers that others ask or give.

As long as everyone follows these few important rules we will all have fun while we are studying, learning, and preparing for your confirmation.

Introduce the Decision Point program

This program will prepare you for confirmation and guide you to be the best person you can be.

    • Students will grow stronger and more confident in their faith as we walk them through preparations for Confirmation.
    • To best achieve this:
      • Attend all student sessions.
      • When an absence cannot be avoided the student will use the App or website to watch the videos outside of class and discuss them with a parent or sponsor.
      • Attend Mass weekly at a parish and time that fits your family schedule.

  • Hope & Expectations for Parents & Sponsors
    • As parents we are the first and primary teachers of our children.
      • As the first and primary teacher of your young teenager we expect you will encourage and support them to grow stronger and more confident in their faith as they prepare for confirmation.
    • To assist Parents & Sponsors
      • Install the App or use the Decision Point Website to watch the same videos your child will be watching and discussing in class.
      • Use the "Rediscover Jesus" book we are providing (One for parents and one for the sponsors) to grow in your faith.
        • Matthew Kelly authors both this book and the Decision Point program so many of the topics are the same. This will help you to encourage your young teenager by continuing our class discussions at home.
        • Each week, read two short devotional sections from the book.
Need Class Helpers
  • We have learned from past experience that students are more open to talking and contributing to the class when we break up into smaller groups.  So, we want to continue using small group discussions to promote student learning.
    • We typically do this two or three times during each session.
  • Looking for and greatly need parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and sponsors to help during student sessions to lead small group discussions of some of the questions in the student workbook that follow the videos.
Open Q&A?
